    Plato: A Collection of Critical Essays. [REVIEW]S. L. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (3):572-574.
Modern Studies in Philosophy, we are informed on the page facing the title-page, "is a series of anthologies presenting contemporary interpretations and evaluations of the works of major philosophers." The volumes are "intended to be contributions to contemporary debates as well as to the history of philosophy; they not only trace the origins of many problems important to modern philosophy, but also introduce major philosophers as interlocutors in current discussions." In the first of the two volumes on Plato three of (...)

    Two concepts of desert.L. A. Garcia - 1986 - Law and Philosophy 5 (2):219 - 235.
In the first section I briefly consider some stituations in which standard desert-claims would be disputed, with the aim of revealing why and by whom they are asserted or denied. Having attained some understanding of the point of different desert-statements, I propose an accound of their content that entails the thesis that statements of positive desert (deserving something desirable) sharply differ in meaning from statements of negative desert (deserving something undesirable), even when expressed in the same form. In the second (...)

I ain't got no body: Developmental psychology must be embodied and enactive, as well as “social”.A. P. Craig & L. Barrett - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (1):103-103.
Although we agree with the authors' criticism of the reigning approach to children's sociocognitive development, we raise three further issues. First, “mind talk” is not, in fact, any different from the other aspects of the social world about which children learn. Second, there is no choice between either the “single mind” or the “social context.” Finally, there is a spurious separation between organism and environment.

    Acceptance and the Problem of Slippery-Slope Insensitivity in Rule-Utilitarianism.L. A. Whitt - 1984 - Dialogue 23 (4):649-660.
Slippery slopes crop up with startling frequency when controversial moral issues are debated. Generally, those who mount this line of argument appeal to some grim, highly undesirable state of affairs which would—they allege—inevitably ensue were society to sanction certain activities. Their reasoning is often fallacious, offering little more than an easy out for those reluctant to address problematic moral issues with the care and honesty they demand.

    Continuous and discrete aspects of blackbody radiation.A. M. Cetto & L. de la Penã - 1989 - Foundations of Physics 19 (4):419-437.
The blackbody radiation field is studied from different points of view. The existence of zero-point fluctuations is shown to be crucial in determining the form of the thermal part of the spectrum. The notion of a continuous field is seen to be compatible with a discrete structure for its interaction: The description normally used in the quantum context does not refer to the field but to its interaction with atomic systems, which involves statistically independent elementary acts of absorption and emission. In attempting to realize the tasks facing Soviet philosophers today, at a crucial moment in the life of our society, and in an attempt to contribute as best we can to clearing up the intellectual atmosphere of the country, we turn again to the question of what philosophy is, what its place in the life of society is, and how it can and must develop. The present article is dedicated to an examination of one of the aspects of this complex (...)

    Probabilistic logic of quantum observations.A. Sernadas, J. Rasga, C. Sernadas, L. Alcácer & A. B. Henriques - 2019 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 27 (3):328-370.
A probabilistic propositional logic, endowed with a constructor for asserting compatibility of diagonalisable and bounded observables, is presented and illustrated for reasoning about the random results of projective measurements made on a given quantum state. Simultaneous measurements are assumed to imply that the underlying observables are compatible. A sound and weakly complete axiomatisation is provided relying on the decidable first-order theory of real closed ordered fields. The proposed logic is proved to be a conservative extension of classical propositional logic.

    A Philosophical Perspective on Evolutionary Systems Biology.Maureen A. O’Malley, Orkun S. Soyer & Mark L. Siegal - 2015 - Biological Theory 10 (1):6-17.
Evolutionary systems biology is an emerging hybrid approach that integrates methods, models, and data from evolutionary and systems biology. Drawing on themes that arose at a cross-disciplinary meeting on ESB in 2013, we discuss in detail some of the explanatory friction that arises in the interaction between evolutionary and systems biology. These tensions appear because of different modeling approaches, diverse explanatory aims and strategies, and divergent views about the scope of the evolutionary synthesis. We locate these discussions in the context (...)

    Done good.A. L. Caplan - 2015 - Journal of Medical Ethics 41 (1):25-27.
How did bioethics manage to grow, flourish and ultimately do so well from a very unpromising birth in the 1970s? Many explanations have been advanced. Some ascribe the field9s growth to a puzzling, voluntary abnegation of moral authority by medicine to non-physicians. Some think bioethics survived by selling out to the biomedical establishment—public and private. This transaction involved bestowing moral approbation on all manner of biomedicine9s doings for a seat at a well-stocked funding table. Some see a sort of clever (...)
